You Can Still Achieve Big This Year

3 Simple Tips to Accomplish Your Goals

I get it - it’s already March and you were hoping that you would have achieved more by now.

Don’t worry! You still have 10 months to make the most of 2024!

Today I’m sharing 3 Tips to Achieve Big This Year.

If you want to enjoy a video version of these 3 principles, check out my debut YouTube video here:

🗻 Stop Trying to Climb a Mountain

Have you heard of the old adage “How do you climb a mountain?”

Many may respond that you need the right equipment:

  • Rope

  • Harness

  • Hiking boots

Others will say that you need training.

The real answer is simply “One step at a time.”

Instead of experiencing dread over the huge goal that you face, break it down into smaller more achievable checkpoints.

This is a principle that I first hear Nicola Mendelson shared in her interview with The Diary of a CEO podcast host Steven Bartlett.

Nicola played a huge role in the global operations at Facebook/Meta, and in this video she shares that “You don’t climb Everest.” Instead you aim to get to checkpoint 1, then checkpoint 2, and so on.

So, whatever your goal, think about how you can break it down.

What are the first 3 checkpoints that’ll help you achieve your goal?

It’s all about taking steps towards your goal.

Don’t worry if they’re small steps.

“Small steps are still steps.”

Let’s move on to Tip #2!

The 2-Minute Rule

Those of you that have read Atomic Habits may be familiar with this principle.

It’s a great tip to bypass the huge amounts of motivation that you usually need to start a task.

The premise is simple: simplify your goal or first checkpoint into the first 2 minutes of that activity.

For example, if your goal is to get into better shape, then the first 2 minutes could be to get into your gym gear.

Alternatively, if you’re looking to ace your next exams, your 2-minute simplification could be to get your textbooks out and put your devices on “Do not disturb.”

By doing this, we only need to pluck up a little bit of motivation as we’re convincing ourselves that we can do a quick, small activity.

Then, once we’ve done that activity, we can use that momentum to propel us further towards our goal.

It’s easier to go for a run if I’m already in my gym gear.

And it’s easier to start studying if my textbooks are out and I’m not getting notifications about the cute cat videos that my wife is sending me.

So, figure out what the 2-minute version of your first activity is.

🙋 “Who?”, Not “How?”

I learned this third and final tip a few weeks ago after I attended Ali Abdaal’s and Sahil Bloom’s event in London at the end of January.

The idea here is that instead of defaulting to asking “How can I achieve my big goal this year?” consider asking “Who can help me achieve my goal this year?”

This is often a better questions for numerous reasons:

  • Journeys and destinations are far more enjoyable when we have the right company

  • Success is often the result of the support that we experience - after all, almost every acceptance speech features a lot of 'thank you's.

  • If the “Who” that you choose to journey with has already achieved a similar goal, they can help you avoid costly mistakes

  • Accountability is underrated when it comes to achieving our goals - having someone regularly touch base to say “What progress have you made recently?” can make all of the difference

Consider working through these journal prompts to better understand how you achieve your goals this year:

✍️ Journal Prompts

• What is your goal for the rest of this year?
• What are some of the checkpoints?
• What is the 2-minute simplification of your goal?
• Who can help you achieve your goal?

Consider journaling through the above questions yourself.

👍 Recommendations

Here are couple of things that I think will complement this week’s newsletter and will help you to get wiser:

1️⃣ The first recommendation is to download a FREE resource to help you achieve big this year!

I’ve made a small document summarising my first YouTube video which should help you identify ways that you can make the most of 2024.

2️⃣ My second recommendation for this week’s issue is to check out Chris Pratt’s 9 Rules Acceptance Speech from the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards.
