Here’s a visual about what I want to talk about today: layering skills.

This visual is a bit abstract, right? Allow me to explain.

✍️ 🏀 What are 3 skills that you are above average at? 🖌 🎶

I regularly get asked about why I started making visuals. 

In truth, Wisdom Made Easy wasn’t originally going to be visuals. In fact, it was never going to be visuals at all!

I initially dreamed about doing a podcast or YouTube channel, but pivoted to visuals when I realised this that it was a more digestible medium for the average person. 

But what gave me the right to do visuals? 

Unless you count a B in Graphic Design at GCSE, I have no formal qualifications for what I’m currently doing.

I didn’t study art at A-Level, I never had any interest in doing illustrations at university, and even though art is subjective, I objectively have less skills in art than my two older brothers! 

How on Earth have I managed to build a following of 75K in 8 months then?!

🧱 Layering skills!

I first heard this concept a few years ago on Matt D’Avela’s podcast where James Clear shared about Scott Adams.

By stacking his understanding of comedy, business and illustrations, Scott Adams made something unique and incredibly successful with the Dilbert Comics. 

🤷‍♂️ What can we learn from this idea?

You have skills that put you in the top 25% of that skill. Stack them!

That’s what helped me with starting Wisdom Made Easy:

• I am not the best illustrator, but I’m probably in the top 25%

• I am not the wisest person in the world, but I might be wiser than the next person

• I am not the hardly a master marketer, but watch more YouTube videos about this stuff than three quarters of the world

By stacking these 3 areas, I’ve managed to build a profitable and fulfilling project that allows me to do what I love: get wiser and encourage other people to get wiser!

✍️ What I’m Working On

Many of you will know that I have been working on a journalling E-book with the goal of getting it out before Christmas and New Year. Unfortunately that is not going to happen…

I think it’s 90% of the way there, but instead of rushing it to capitalise on people starting new habits for New Year, I’d rather launch this when it’s truly ready.
