Completing a New Year’s Resolutions (And Failing Another)

3 Life-Changing Principles of Wisdom

Today’s newsletter is the first of a two-part reflection on the power of meeting exceptional people.

Since the start of this year, I have been fortunate to meet some remarkable individuals, and even though this was one of my New Year’s Resolutions, I don’t think that I could have imagined the life-changing discussions that I would have had with these pioneers.

Today I’m sharing 3 wise people that I’ve met since the start of January and how they helped me get wiser.

Next week, I’ll share another 3!

Let’s start with a name that I’ve mentioned in my newsletter before:

✍️ Hannah Wilson (Quoted Visually)

I can’t believe that it took me so long to meet Hannah Wilson.

We’ve been talking on WhatsApp since 2022, but we never realised that we live less than an hour away from each other!

Hannah has a remarkable gift for communicating complex ideas in a beautiful, minimalistic way.

She’s currently undertaking the mammoth task of creating a course to help people learn the skill of visual communication.

I asked her how she was finding the process, and here’s our first wise principle:

If you’re trying to achieve something BIG, break it down into manageable chunks.

Throughout our discussion, she’s shared how she’s turning up daily and placing a piece of the puzzle.

As she continues to put more pieces down, she’s getting closer to finishing what will be a masterpiece of an online course.

🤔 Paul Dykes (Curious Brainfarts)

Meeting Paul Dykes was an absolute delight.

Not only do we share many mutual beliefs, but his eagerness to pull on the threads of curiosity is inspiring.

He’s not content having just wonderings - he has to explore the topic.

This brings me on to the second principle of wisdom I’ve learned:

Curiosity and wisdom go hand-in-hand.
You can’t be wise without the whys.

I’ve been really enjoying his podcast with his sister Lou.

🔵 Sahil Bloom (Curiosity Chronicle)

This wise principle is something that I had already heard, but Sahil Bloom gave me a personal experience so now it’s a wise principle that I know.

On the train to Ali Abdaal and Sahil Bloom’s event in London earlier this year, I journaled about the following quote:

“People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
- Maya Angelou

I didn’t want to go to this event and spend all of my time talking about myself and what I’m building with Wisdom Made Easy.

Instead, I wanted to ensure that those that I interacted with felt seen and heard.

As I journaled, I committed to making sure that people felt special.

Fast forward a couple of hours, and I was standing outside a coffee shop listening to Sahil Bloom speak with a crowd of 40 people about various topics including business, parenting, meaning and much more.

As I have previously worked with Sahil to visualise his ideas, I was hoping that he might recognise me and we could have a quick catch-up. (You can see one of those visuals here).

He didn’t recognise me, but that’s okay. The gentleman has a HUGE following online and I’m just 1 of the many people he’s worked with, right?

Well, a couple hours later I find myself having a meal with the aforementioned Paul and someone you’ll hear about in next week’s newsletter, and I receive a few DMs from Sahil Bloom.

Simply put, this made me feel seen; it made me feel special.

He really didn’t have to, right? He has very little To gain from dropping me a little message like that.

Sahil was less than 2 hours away from speaking to 400+ people and he took a couple of minutes out to drop me a message.

Even though I have no intentions of forgetting what Sahil said that evening, or what he’s doing with his platform, I certainly won’t forget how he made me feel in that moment.

Can I be honest with you?

This week has been one of my worst since becoming a visual creator. 😅

One of the things that creators don’t really talk about is the real threat of copyright infringement.

Having witnessed a business person (who frankly should know better) recreate 14 of my images without any attribution so that they could promote their own business was awfully disappointing.

Even though I promised myself at the start of this year that I wouldn’t let this thing get to me, I have found this particular instance hard to take. It’s safe to say that I’m failing this New Year’s Resolution…
