Do You Know Where You're Meant to Be?
Hello 4,811 friends, it’s Michael here!
Today’s newsletter reflects on the idea of feeling at home, but before we dive into that meaty topic, Zac and I want to invite you to encourage people to get WISER.
🫵 Would you like to write an issue of this newsletter? We know that there are lots of you in this wonderful community that have wise messages to share. Are you interested in collaborating with us to share a wise principle with this community? |
Now let’s get WISER together!
The idea for this issue came after my wife and I recently became the proud owners of our first house!
We are also owners of six-figures of crippling debt, but I’ll save the terror that I’m experiencing from that for another issue.
Instead, let’s reflect on this question:
🤔 Do you have a home?
Most of us will likely default to thinking about a building, right?
You know, the place that houses our belongings, where we rest our heads for the evening, that we have a key for, that we charge our devices in and so on.
But instead, what if you consider a home as a place where you belong; the place where you are truly meant to be in any given moment.
It’s not necessarily geographic, but perhaps it’s relational, occupational, educational, spiritual, all of the above and more!
What does home meant to you?
Do you know where you belong?
Do you know where you are meant to be right now?
I’m conscious that many people often find this kind of questioning uncomfortable, but there is merit in spending time exploring this.
I don’t have a definitive answer about how to find your home, but here’s a couple of perspectives that caught my eyes and ears.
🏡 Home Can Be Found in Relationships
My idea that home isn’t a place isn’t an original one.
One of the first instances that I heard this premise was at Charlie Mackesy’s book tour for The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse.
For those of you that aren’t familiar with this book, it features a narrative with the four aforementioned characters and numerous memorable quotes that you’ll find yourself forwarding to your loved ones.
Since his book tour in 2019, Charlie has gone on to have an animated version of his book produced, which has since won an Oscar.
In particular, I wanted to share this art and quote with you:
“Home isn’t always a place is it?”
- The Boy
There’s something powerful about The Boy going on this adventure and finding “Home” in the company of his friends.
“Home” can be found in relationships.
🚤 Home Can Be Found in Purpose
What would you do if after getting everything that you had worked so hard for you felt empty?
Well Laura Try got on a boat!
Below, Laura shares how she went from owning her own successful salon to finding herself rowing the Atlantic with essentially 4 strangers.
You can listen to the full story here, but there’s a particular quote that I want to share with you from it:
“It's strange to think that being on that boat with so few belongings, a boat that just drifted along with no address, suddenly I felt as though I was at home.“
- Laura Try
For her, she knew that she was exactly where she was meant to be in that moment.
“Home” can be where you find your purpose is.
✍️ Journal Prompts
• What does “home” mean to you?
• Do you feel at “home” at the moment?
• Where else do you think “home” can be found?
Consider journaling through the above questions yourself.
👍 Recommendations
Here’s a couple of things that we think will compliment this week’s newsletter and will help you to get wiser:
1️⃣ The first recommendation has to be Charlie Mackesy’s book The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse.
There are no words that I can write here that would truly express how much I recommend this book.
Do yourself a favour and pick up a copy here:
2️⃣ Our second recommendation is for Laura Try’s YouTube channel.
I’ve been following Laura’s wholesome content for a while now, and I’ve found her exploration of living a healthy and meaningful life inspiring.
I also admire how she promotes close relationships with your parents and her vulnerability in her failures. It makes it far more enjoyable to celebrate her successes.
