Reading is one of the best return of investments of your time and money.
Pejman Milani describes me as “The Master of Graphs”.
Here’s a bar chart explaining why reading is a worthwhile endeavour:
When you consider how much value a book can offer, it’s a bit of a no-brainer.
We could all benefit from reading more.
Today’s quote is by an author that can boast selling nearly 100 million copies of his literature:
“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies . . . The man who never reads lives only one.”
Even though George R. R. Martin is a fictional author, his sentiment is true for non-fiction books too.
Reading grants a glimpse into someone else’s education, experiences and expertise.
The right book gives you the opportunity to step into someone else’s shoes, see the world as they do, and ultimately expand your understanding.
You can acquire most books for just $20, and a book of 80,000 words takes approximately 6 hours to read.
This is a tiny investment when you consider how much goes into producing a book.
For example, one of the books that I recommend the most is James Clear’s Atomic Habits.
It’s a life-changing book that provides actionable advice to achieve your goals by implementing habits that stick.
On his website, Clear shares that it took 3 years of researching and writing to create his New York Times Bestseller.
Another book that I encourage many people to read is Bronnie Ware’s The Top 5 Regrets of the Dying - a book that outlines Ware’s years of experience as a palliative care nurse.
She collated the most common things that people had wished they had done with their lives as they came to grips with their mortality.
This book is dense with wisdom, capturing the reflections that come from dozens of people’s experience.
Take a moment, and let this sink in:
You can have access to all of this life-changing wisdom, that took the writers years to gather by merely reading for just a few hours.
Complete today’s Reflection about your reading habit, and check out today’s Resources for 5 book recommendations.
Now it’s your time to reflect on today’s wisdom.
Consider journaling your responses to the following questions:
What book has changed your life?
If you were to write a book, what would it be about?
How much time do you devote to reading?
If, like me, you’re keen to get the best return on investment of your time and money, you won’t want to miss today’s sponsor: Shortform.
