Why I’m Not a Solopreneur

5 Essential Lessons of Collaboration

Hello 4,593 friends, it’s Michael here!

Thanks for checking out this issue of the WISER Newsletter. Let’s get WISER together!

🦸‍♂️ Creators… ASSEMBLE!

Today I want to encourage you to collaborate more.

This reflection comes after I have recently been invited by Kacy Maxwell to participate in a collaboration post with some talented visual creators.

You can find that post here:

Collaboration has always been a key part of Wisdom Made Easy. In fact, it’s one of The 10 Cs of Content Creation we developed to help us build a following of 100,000+ in under a year.

Before we look at how to be better collaborators, we need to establish why we ought to consider collaboration in the first place.

🤔 What’s your view on this quote?

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
- African Proverb

It’s often used to rebuttal some of the hustle advice that many people promote on Twitter, but beyond it being a good comeback against solopreneurship, it makes a lot of sense.

For those wondering, I’m not against solopreneurship.

In fact, Wisdom Made Easy was a solo venture when I founded it May 2022, and even though it was fun doing this thing on my own that I started, it is far more enjoyable now that Zac and I are in a business partnership.

Being a “one-man-band” allowed me to be agile, but now we’re embracing our new identity as your favourite metaphorical musical duo by bouncing ideas off of one another to create something better than the sum of its parts.

What would the opposite of Daft Punk be? Wise Nerd?

Since Zac’s come on board, we have:

Simply put, our tag-teaming has helped Wisdom Made Easy to evolve; we’re reaching new heights because of collaboration.

Here’s a visual from my close friend PJ Milani that represents this exceptionally well:

🤝 The Power of Collaboration

But we’re not the first to recognise the power of collaboration. Here’s Dr. Shelle VanEtten de Sanchez’s TED Talk from 9 years ago:

If you’re unsure why and how to collaborate, Shelle’s 5 Essential Lessons of Collaborations are a great place to start:

  • Let go of your ego - invite other people edit your ideas, even if that means your ideas fall to the ground

  • Practice makes perfect - you can learn to collaborate

  • Share and share alike - collaboration actually means that you have to share the work, resources, blame and credit

  • Holding tight is safe, but small - you’ll never know what will happen when you share an idea with a group, but that idea can grow into something far greater with the right team

  • Teamwork does not equal collaboration - recruiting, mobilizing and delegating isn’t necessarily a collaborative experience

✍️ Journal Prompts

  • Would you describe yourself as a good collaborator?

  • Are there any areas or your life, work or studies that could benefit from the power of collaboration? If so, what could you do today to be more collaborative in that area?

  • Which of Shelle’s 5 Essential Lessons of Collaborations resonates with you the most? Is there another lesson that you could add?

Consider journalling through the above questions yourself.

Recommendations

Today’s recommendation section is a celebration of those that we recently had the chance to collaborate with.

✍️ What We’re Working On

Normally you might find us using this section to promote a product or service that we can offer.

Instead, we’ll use it to encourage you to take care of yourself.

Both of us are currently navigating through change including moving house or getting use to new jobs, and so our capacity to release new resources to help you get wiser is temporarily impacted.

And that’s okay!

We know our limits, and we’re being sensible to ensure that we’re not overwhelming ourselves. This will allow us to be our best selves for our family, our jobs, one another and for this wise community!

We’ll be sharing more exciting stuff soon, but for this week we are proud to say that we have nothing new to share.
