I Need a Break...

What I'm Doing to Stop Burnout

Hello friends, it’s Michael here!

I don’t want to waste any time this week, so let’s dive straight into getting WISER together!

Are You Doing Too Much?

We’ve all reflected on this question, right?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot over the last few weeks and I have come to a realisation:

I need to take a break.

This became obvious after receiving a voice message from my good friend PJ Milani earlier this week. In particular, we found ourselves discussing 2 kinds of burnout:

  • The loud and fast explosive burnout

  • The slow and quiet sizzling burnout

Unless I change direction, I’m heading towards the second kind of burnout.

🔥 Burnout Is a Real Risk

I always thought that burnout was something that other people experienced, but the reality is that anyone can experience burnout.

And it’s amusing that I am now thinking of taking a break.

My brain has been subtly teasing me with the idea of pausing. It was only earlier this month that I created this visual:

Believe this for yourself:

You will burnout if you don’t rest.

My wife even shared a quote with me this week that hit hard:

“If you cannot afford to take one day a week of rest, you are taking yourself too seriously.”
- Eugene Peterson

Take a moment to reflect on whether you are getting enough rest.

🙅 Taking Care of Yourself is Non-Negotiable

I’m conscious that some people find this idea of self-care to be uncomfortable or a bit fluffy.

“That’s not for me - I’m made of tougher stuff.”

Spoiler alert - you’re not made of tougher stuff, and you should definitely be prioritising your wellbeing.

Self-care is and will always be a necessity.

If you treat it as a luxury for others to enjoy, you will burnout.

I’m not saying that you have to go on holiday or go get a message, but take care of yourself.

This will look differently for everyone, so figure out what works for you!

🤔 So… What Next?

If you’re worried about getting your Wisdom Made Easy / WISER Newsletter fix, don’t worry! We’ll still be delivering the same ol’ high quality content!

In fact, thanks to Publer and Beehiiv, we’ve scheduled our content for the rest of August!

As for me individually, I’m not in the fortunate position to have the rest of the month off, but I do have the next week off of my 9-5 employment.

Self-care during this period is a must and will include:

  • 🏃 Exercise - I’ve been getting back into running recently!

  • 🍓 Diet - I plan to make the most of the UK’s strawberry season!

  • 💬 Community - Time with loved ones is great for my well-being.

  • 📖 Reading - I’m currently revisiting one of my favourite books of the Bible: Proverbs.

  • ❤️ Love - Last but certainly not least, quality time with my beautiful wife.

So enough jibber-jabber!

I’ll be back in a couple of weeks.

✌️

✍️ Journal Prompts

• Have you ever experienced burnout?
• Do you get enough rest?
• What does self-care look like for you?

Consider journaling through the above questions yourself.

👍 Recommendations

Here’s a couple of things that we think will complement this week’s newsletter and will help you to get wiser:

1️⃣ The first recommendation is to do something for yourself this week.

In this section I normally share a product or service that go well with the newsletter, but this week I want you to treat yo’self!

Do something that will bring a smile to your face.

When you do, send me an email or DM us on whatever platform you’d like to. I’d love to hear from you!

2️⃣ Our second recommendation is to check out PJ’s upcoming visual course!

If you’re not familiar of him, PJ’s a wise gentleman, with a heart of gold, and a remarkable talent for creating thought-provoking visuals.

He’s about to launch the initial cohort of his highly demanded visual course, and I couldn’t be more excited.
