Milestones Are Just Stepping Stones
Reflecting on 100 Weekly Newsletter
Estimated reading time: 4 minutes, 18 seconds
Even though there is value in celebrating your progress, there’s still more to achieve.
Milestones are just stepping stones.
Keep going.
Let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit a visual that I first shared back in 2022:
The best way to avoid falling into the water when skipping across stepping stones is to maintain momentum.
Don’t get complacent - there’s more to be achieved.
Let’s look at today’s quote:
“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”
Even though there is value in slowing down or even resting, Einstein highlights an important point.
Many people become unbalanced once they reach their destination. They lose all the momentum that they had in the pursuit of their goals.
Last week’s newsletter was a special one.
It was the 100th weekly WISER Newsletter published.
I have shared a nugget of wisdom directly to your inbox for almost two years without missing a single week.
One could argue that this is something worth celebrating, but do you want to know the truth?
I’m just getting started.
But enough about me, let’s see a few examples of why it is important to keep going.
Tell me if this narrative sounds familiar:
Someone works exceptionally hard to achieve a particular goal.
It could be within sport, business, media, art or any industry that you can think of.
They eventually achieve their goal, and there’s enormous celebrations.
But then just a few years later, you hear that that individual has since lost their way, perhaps struggle with their purpose, or even become disgraced.
There are countless examples of this:
Once a dominant NFL star that appeared in Super Bowl XLVI, Aaron Hernandez lost his way, ultimately being convicted of murder a mere few years later.
Both recognised by Forbes as 30 Under 30, Elizabeth Holmes and Sam Bankman-Fried had such promise, but are now remembered for defrauding people out of millions.
Jonathan Majors landed the role of a lifetime as a Marvel Cinematic Universe villain, only to then be charged with assault of his then-girlfriend.
I’m sure you could add dozens to this list too.
It is important to clarify that having goals and achieving them is not a bad thing, but it is crucial that we have an overarching purpose that drives us.
When we set a finite goal as our sole focus, we set ourselves up for a catastrophic fall in mental health when we eventually achieve that goal.
Like Einstein shared, if we wish to find balance, it’s important that find something to keep us moving.
For Wisdom Made Easy and I, the overarching goal (or purpose) is to constantly get wiser and encourage you to get wiser.
Even though it’s been great to achieve particular milestones like publishing a newsletter each week for nearly 2 years, I am continuing to press ahead because I can still get wiser and I still want to encourage you to get wiser.
Do you know your purpose?
Do you know what will keep you going?
Today I wish to encourage you to complete today’s Reflection to consider how you can keep moving.
Now is your chance to discern how this wisdom fits into your life.
Consider journaling your responses to the following questions:
What is a goal that I am currently working towards? Is this a finite goal?
Do I have an overarching goal or purpose?
Today’s resource to complement today’s newsletter comes courtesy of a collaboration between talented visual maker Andrew Nalband and author, YouTuber entrepreneur Ali Abdaal.
To celebrate the wise principles shared in Ali’s debut book, Andrew created a visual summary of some of the core concepts.
This is available for free online, and I’d highly recommend it for everyone that’s interested in understanding how to experience Feel-Good Productivity.
