The grass is not greener on the other side, the grass is greener where you water it.

Comparison distracts you from cultivation.

What you nurture will grow, whilst what you ignore will fade.

Here’s today’s Wisdom Made Easy visual:

This visual remains to this day one of my favourites.

James Clear has the belief that authors write the books that they personally need the most.

This illustration is one I drew because I too need it the most.

You might need it too!

Do you find yourself struggling with comparison with others more than you try to improve your own circumstances?

“Comparison is the thief of joy.”

- Theodore Roosevelt

When we constantly look at what others have, we lose sight of what we’ve been given.

Joy fades when gratitude is replaced with comparison.

It’s never been easier to compare your life to someone else’s.

Scroll for a few minutes and you’ll see more lucrative careers, leaner bodies, more extravagant lifestyles, and better opportunities.

And without realising it, you can start to believe “If only I had what they have, things would be better.”

But here’s the truth: you don’t need someone else’s life - you need to invest in your own.

Because growth doesn’t come from comparison. It comes from cultivation.

Here are 3 ways to shift your focus:

  1. Focus on what’s already in your hands

You may not control your starting point, but you can control what you do with it.

Your time, your energy, your skills. These things are your watering can.

  2. Limit comparison triggers

Be mindful of what fuels unhealthy comparison.

Whether it’s social media or certain environments, create space from what constantly makes you feel “behind.”

Or at least notice how to have a healthier relationship with these things.

For example, it might be less about avoiding social media and being more considerate who you follow.

  3. Take one intentional step forward

Instead of wishing for someone else’s outcome, take action in your own life.

Small, consistent steps compound over time, and that’s where real growth happens.

Perhaps the one small action you take today ought to be journaling through today’s 3 reflection questions.

Let’s dive deeper into today’s wisdom with these 3 journal prompts:

  • Where in my life am I comparing instead of cultivating?

  • What do I already have that I could invest in more intentionally?

  • What is one small way I can “water my grass” today?

This book challenges the habit of constant comparison by encouraging you to measure progress against your past, not someone else’s present.

It’s a powerful shift that helps you recognise growth, build momentum, and stay focused on your own journey.

This, along with Benjamin Hardy’s other books have got a safe space on my bookshelf, and they ought to on yours.
