Today Is A Gift

Will You Make The Most of It?

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes, 53 seconds

Every day is precious.

Today is a gift.

Make the most of it.

Here’s a playful representation of today’s nugget of wisdom:

Did you know that I create these illustrations in Procreate?

Watch a timelapse of me drawing one of my most popular visuals here.

The quote that inspired this visual comes from the 2008 animated movie Kung-Fu Panda:

“Yesterday is history,
Tomorrow is a mystery,
And today is a gift…
That’s why they call it the present!”

Master Oogway

Master Oogway shares numerous quotes across the franchise that will make you stop and think.

You can find more of this iconic character’s thought-provoking sayings here.

In the hustle of everyday life, it's easy to take the present moment for granted.

We get caught up in routines, responsibilities and restlessness, losing sight of the fact that each day is truly unique.

Even if you're in the midst of a particularly busy or stressful season, it’s important to remember that today is precious.

It’s not just another day to get through - it is your opportunity to experience, learn, and grow.

I’ve been reflecting on this a lot recently, especially because I’ve become a father in the last couple of months.

My daughter is growing at an alarming rate, and I’m constantly reminded how fast time moves.

Seeing her change each day has made me more mindful of how time passes, so I’m making an effort to be fully present, and to appreciate these moments.

After all, these special moments will eventually pass.

Just as Master Oogway says in Kung-Fu Panda, today is a gift.

So, are you living like today is a gift?

Here’s 3 tips to help you make the most of today:

  • Practice Gratitude - Develop a gratitude practice that works for you. This could be a Gratitude Jar, gratitude journaling, prayer or something else.

  • Be Intentional - Spend time doing an activity that you find meaningful today. Consider putting on “Do not disturb” and catch up with a loved one.

  • Avoid Distractions - You won’t be able to stop all distractions, but try to limit how much time you spend doom scrolling. This makes space for the more important things in your life.

Consider completing today’s Reflection section to understand how you can make the most of your day.

Now it’s your time to reflect on today’s wisdom.

Consider journaling your responses to the following questions:

  • Do I live like every day is a gift?

  • What am I grateful for today?

  • What can I do to make today feel special?

The resource that compliments today’s WISER newsletter comes courtesy of BJ Miller.

In 2015, Miller did a TED Talk where he shared about his near death experience, and how it has helped shape how he lives his life.

A particular quote he shares in this talk that moves me every time I hear it is:

“You can always find a shock of beauty or meaning in what life you have left.”

The nature of this video is interesting when we juxtapose it against Master Oogway’s quote, but I implore you to watch to it.

It just might change your life.
