I’ve Been Struggling...
What to do when you’re not doing well
Hello 4,716 friends, it’s Michael here!
Thanks for checking out this issue of the WISER Newsletter.
I want to come clean about my recent mental health and reflect on the ingredients of a healthy mindset, but first I want to thank you all for your feedback in last week’s polls!
We’re keen to make this newsletter the best that it can possibly be, so let us know your ideal length of wise reading material.
What is your preferred length of newsletter issue? We have a habit of wafflin' on. 😅 Have your say on how long the newsletter should take to read here: |
Now let’s get WISER together!
Today’s newsletter was originally going to be about the topic of home and belonging, but I’ll save that for next week.
Instead, I felt the need to be honest with you all: I haven’t been doing well over the last week.
In fact, my mental health has been a little wobbly over the last few weeks.
The main reason for this is the stress of my wife and I buying our first house, but it’s helped me to reaffirm something very important.
🌿 Healthy Habits Makes for a Healthy Mindset
This isn’t necessarily a new revelation.
In fact, I first shared a visual on this topic back in July 2022. Here’s an updated redesign of it:

It’s simple really: to flourish and grow into the the best version of yourself, you need to have the right foundations.
I have not had the healthiest mindset over the last few weeks because I haven’t had the healthiest habits; my roots haven’t been deep or in the right place.
I know that to be at my healthiest, I need:
😴 Enough Sleep - This is typically 8 hours per night
🥦 Balanced Diet - More vegetables, less fizzy drinks
🏃♂️ Exercise - For me this is running (painting and laying laminate flooring doesn’t count)
🌲 Time Outside - Preferably in the sun, but I’ll take the rain over no time outside
📝 Journaling - An opportunity to scribble through the things that I am experiencing each day
🙏 Faith - This means time in prayer, worshipping and with my church
🫂 Relationships - Meaningful connections with those that I love
Out of all of the above, it’s only the latter two that I’ve truly engaged with over the past few weeks, and my mental wellbeing has suffered!
Fortunately, having gone through Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and recognising the value of vulnerability, I’ve been able to share my mental wobbles with those that are closest with me.
So instead of wafflin’ on like I usually do in these issues, I’m going to sign-off now and go for a run outside to add a couple of these things back into my life.
But before I do, I encourage you to reflect on what are the things that you need to have a healthy mindset?
And if you need someone to talk to, feel free to respond to this email. You are not alone. 🤍
✍️ Journal Prompts
• What are the foundations of you having a healthy mindset?
• Do you feel like you currently have a healthy mindset?
• What things do you need to grow and flourish?
Consider journaling through the above questions yourself.
👍 Recommendations
We normally use this space to encourage you to check out some extra resources to help you to get wiser.
Instead, this week I’ll encourage you to spend time doing the things that help you to stay mentally healthy.
Feel free to stop reading and go get some fresh air too.
✍️ What We’re Working On
A cool thing that’s happened over the last week is that The Wiser Guide to Journaling has now been sold in over 30 different countries!
It might not seem like a big deal, but it’s really neat that this community spans the whole globe. Thank you for being a part of it!
And thank you to everyone who voted on the poll in last week’s issue about The 10 Cs of Content Creation.
As so many of you voice that you’d like to see us make a resource on this, we’ll begin putting it together! We’ll announce it here when it’s ready!
